Anyone who regularly made the nighttime passeggiata in the 1990s and early 2000s will recall the electronic keyboard artistry of Durevol B. “Vol” Quitzow (1927-2011), whose downbeat — sometimes mournful — melodies often seemed at odds with the generally lighthearted spirit of the evening. Described by his daughter, Erica, as a painter, sculptor, writer, pianist, composer, modern dancer, Quitzow turned to busking, he told The Banner in 2003, to help make enough money to pay the taxes on this property. (His principal home was in Maitland, Fla.) Quitzow purchased the house in 1976. Ownership was transferred to Erica, who lives in Brooklyn, in 2007.
