Here does not lie Captain Cook — “perhaps Provincetown’s most legendary, adventurous, and colorful whaling captain, he spent nearly 50 years at sea, commanding whaling voyages to the Sea of the Japan and the Arctic,” in Amy Whorf McGuiggan’s estimation. Instead, McGuiggan tells us in Provincetown’s Historic Cemeteries and Memorials, the captain is buried in Coral Gables, Fla., whence he decamped after divorcing Viola Delphine Fish Cook (1855-1922), who looms even larger in town history than her towering ex-husband.
