Hildegard M. (Dertz) Sylvia (1924-2009).
A charming, alert dachshund, wearing Provincetown dog license tags from the 1990s, guards the grave of Hildegard Sylvia. A native of Kassel, in central Germany, Fräulein Dertz was a school teacher. She married Master Sgt. Sherman F. Sylvia (1918-1987), an Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. After many years living in various places around Europe and the United States, they settled in Provincetown in 1967. She was a volunteer at the Drop-In Center in the 1970s and — befitting her graveside monument — at the time of her death, memorial contributions were directed to the Carrie A. Seaman Animal Shelter.
