The Mayflower Apartments occupy a substantial house (c 1850) set on a slight rise overlooking the ample yard of 442 Commercial Street. For many years, this was home to the family of Frank Dutra (±1873-1949) and his wife, Mary (Nunes) Dutra (±1867-1950). Both were born in Pico in the Azores and had come to this country in the 1910s. Dutra was a fisherman for many years. The Dutra family sold the property in 1969 to Klara E. Muller (b 1931), the proprietor of the Mayflower Cottages at 898 Commercial Street.
