Visitors know it as the Dunes. An older generation knew it as the Great Beach. But just about everyone understands that when folks in Provincetown speak of the Back Shore, they refer to the vast and rugged country that faces the Atlantic Ocean — and takes the brunt and beauty of it. Its principal human-made features are the dune shacks, each one of which is chronicled individually in the following entries.
