Squid Woman’s House.
“Squid Woman” was the name given by the Champlins to a member of the Nelson family — Mildred Champlin said she thought it might have been Clarence Nelson’s sister — who approached Nat Champlin apprehensively one day in the early 1950s and offered him a paper bag full of squid. The house fell apart, Mildred told Robert J. Wolfe for his study, Dwelling in the Dunes, but remained a landmark even after it disappeared. “We’d say, ‘How far down the beach did you go?’ And you’d say, ‘Just past the Squid Woman’s.'”
