CCNS-HC Route 6 Terminus.jpg

(2010)

Eastern terminus of U.S. Route 6.

Route 6, the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, is the second-longest highway in the United States. It runs 3,205 miles, from Herring Cove to Bishop, Calif., which is about the size of Provincetown, roughly 90 miles northeast of Fresno. Until 1964, it continued another 447 miles to Long Beach, and was the nation’s longest highway. (U.S. Route 20 now has that distinction.) It’s still the only roadway in Provincetown that also goes through Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California.
