CCNS-HC.jpgWithin my lifetime, one could drive directly to Herring Cove Beach from Long Beach, Calif., along Route 6, America’s longest highway. “New Beach” is the old name of Herring Cove Beach, but the name Herring Cove is actually older. It appears plainly on the critically important Map of the Extremity of Cape Cod, prepared between 1833 and 1835 by Maj. J. D. Graham of the U.S. Topographical Engineers, although it is slightly farther north, around the entrance to Hatches Harbor. What we now call Herring Cove was known in the early 19th century as Lancy’s Harbor. Here is a Google map of all the features of the Cape Cod National Seashore that may be found on Building Provincetown.
