John Nickerson salt works [Long Point Settlement No. 48].
Before the Civil War, it would have been possible to look across Provincetown Harbor and see the silhouettes of windmills on the horizon, marking the salt works on Long Point. The extensive nature of the sites, at which salt was evaporated from seawater as a preservative agent, can be seen in this map, drawn between 1833 and 1835, and published in 1836.
