The “Race” of Race Point has nothing to do with racing around the tip of Cape Cod. Instead, it refers to Race Run, the once-dynamic body of water extending from Herring Cove to a point about 500 feet west of what is now the Provincetown Municipal Airport, at ordinary high water; and almost as far as the Truro line, in extremely high water. (A race is a strong current that flows through a narrow channel.) Here is a Google map of all the features of the Cape Cod National Seashore that may be found on Building Provincetown.
