Taves Boatyard winch house.
This modest little structure, pretty much invisible to anyone passing by, actually played an oversized role in the operation of the boatyard. It houses the winch that pulls the carriage along the marine railway, cradling a boat — sometimes a very big boat — that is being hauled out for inspection, repair, maintenance, and painting. You can see the opening near the base of the building through which the cable emerges, and the small window through which the winch operator can keep an eye on things. A longer discussion of the boatyard’s history, and its marine railway, is in the first entry for 129R Commercial Street.
