21 Center Street Condominium (Unit B).
Life with a working rail yard just outside the front door could be as miserable as you might imagine. Fred W. Rogers, a longtime postal clerk who lived here with his wife, Florence, started a petition in 1951 calling on the Department of Public Utilities to ban work in the yard between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. (The locomotive house and turntable, long since demolished, were less than 100 feet away from the Rogers home.) The New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad said that such a restriction would require it to keep an extra engine in Hyannis and delay freight shipments. Guess who won?
Jay C. Anderson of Los Angeles and Robert A. O’Malley of Provincetown, who converted 19 Center Street into a condo in 1999, did the same here two years later. The architects were Krueger Associates of Cambridge. This unit, the main house, was purchased in 2006 by a man from Chatham, N.J., for $755,000.
