Sad enough to find a marker saying that a 28-year-old “was drowned,” but the back story here at Lot No. 321 is sadder yet, as Amy Whorf McGuiggan explained in Provincetown’s Historic Cemeteries and Memorials. Cook’s sister, Belinda Pettingill (1826-1857) was drowned a year earlier when the whaling schooner E. Nickerson went down — along with her husband, Capt. John Pettingill (1822-1857), and their sons Thomas Pettingill (1849-1857) and Marshall Pettingill (1853-1857).
