Dorothy Lake Gregory (1893-1975).
Though buried under the name of Dorothy Moffett, with her husband Ross E. Moffett (1888-1971), she is better known as the artist Dorothy Lake Gregory. A native of Brooklyn, she studied at the Pratt Institute there; then at the Art Students League, under Robert Henri; then, beginning in 1914, with Charles Webster Hawthorne in Provincetown. In his minuscule town art collection, the author is lucky enough to count the evocative Provincetown Night by Gregory — intersecting and overlapping planes of nocturnal tableaux — which was exhibited in the first 1958 show at the Provincetown Art Association.
