Samuel Knowles (1831-1893).
The five-sided star and initials “F C & L” — Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty — mark this grave as that of a veteran of the Union cause, the Grand Army of the Republic. Knowles and Lysander Paine operated a stable at what is now 293 Commercial Street and a stagecoach that ran all the way to Orleans. The arrival of the Old Colony Rail Road in 1873 wrecked that business, but Knowles adapted, giving his coaches a new coat of paint and ferrying arriving train passengers from the depot to their hotels. His grandson, Frank Knowles Atkins, replaced the stable with the Pilgrim Theater.
