Capt. Henry Ryder (±1804-1849).
The weeping willow is a common motif on 19th-century gravestones, but it seems especially suited for Lot 295. Captain Ryder died in a shipwreck off Long Island at the age of 45. His wife, Anna, had died two years earlier, at 40. Their daughter Amanda died in 1829 after 11 days of life; their son Lorenzo survived one year and 11 months before he died in 1839. Son William died at 21, in 1855, “on his passage from California to Oregon.” And a third son, Henry Rider, died in Michigan in 1866. He was all of 35.
