Cemetery 24 Small James PHC&M 37

(2017)

James H. Small (±1832-1846) and Joshua D. P. Small (±1825-1846).

“While youthful prospects fill’d their eyes, the storm with merciless strife forced these young brothers both to die,” their tombstone says mournfully. James Small, 14, and Joshua Small, 21, perished with their father, Capt. James Small, aboard the whaling brig Rienzi when it was wrecked off the coast of Bermuda on 16 September 1846. Their mother, Betsey (Cook) Small, died broken-hearted months later.
