Cemetery 25 Atkins Joseph PHC&M 01

(2017)

Capt. Joseph Atkins (1766-1851) | Hamilton.

Captain Atkins lived in one of the grandest homes in Provincetown — then and now: 160 Commercial Street, better known today as the Grozier or Cabral House. Opposite his home, he built the Central Wharf, around 1839, at what is now 163 Commercial. The 1,000-foot pier had a marine railway, sheds for various crafts and trades, and four ballast rooms. It was destroyed or badly damaged in the Portland Gale of 1898. (The storm takes its name from the passenger steamboat Portland, which went down with the loss of 150 to 200 lives.) [Lot No. 48.]
