Cemetery 25 Caton Joseph PHC&M 23

(2017)

Capt. Joseph Mayo Caton (1823-1894) | Gifford.

On 24 May 1861, armed with a letter of marque and reprisal from the rebel Confederate government, the privateer Calhoun seized three Provincetown whaling vessels near British Honduras, off the east coast of Central America. They were the brig Panama, the schooner Mermaid, and the schooner John Adams, commanded by Captain Caton. As his dates suggest, the captain survived. He and 62 crew members from the three vessels — including eight black seamen — were taken to New Orleans and released. Presumably, the 215 barrels of oil they carried stayed behind. [Lot No. 207.]
