Masthead Resort and Cottages | Old Furniture Shop.
The Old Furniture Shop was an antiques store operated by Edith Hendrick on property acquired from her family in the 1920s. The artisan Arthur Anderson apprenticed here and then operated the antiques store and the cottage colony until the Ciluzzis arrived. “He worked for her and she taught him the antiques business,” John E. Ciluzzi recalled in 2015. “The fact that Anderson was a carpenter attributes to the fact of much of the fine carpentry at the Masthead.” The trademark of the store was a wooden statue of a native American — a cigar-store Indian, in the parlance of the day — which Anderson offered to Ciluzzi’s father, John Joseph Ciluzzi, who did not want it. An antiques dealer in Orleans paid more than $1,000 for it. Until recently, the gently understated door-jamb sign for the shop was still visible. Inside this building are the Mrs. Bob Hope Room, where Delores Hope once stayed; the Billy Joel Deluxe Studio; the J. Kosinsky Deluxe Unit; the South Beach Room; and the Captain’s Quarters.
