Former William Maynard studio.
Built as Sol Nickerson’s workshop, this small shed-style cottage was once F. Coulton Waugh’s painting studio. (Waugh and his wife also operated shops in 72 Commercial Street.) One of Waugh’s most delightful compositions, a cross between his work as a painter and as an illustrator, is A Map of Cape Cod. But the building was much better known in recent decades as the home and (very) open studio of William Maynard (1921-2016). “YES … you may visit my studio,” said a sign mounted on a painter’s palette and stuck in the front lawn. “NO … you will not disturb me if I am painting.”
Maynard, a neo-Impressionist landscape and seascape painter, was born in Brookline. He was graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (now part of Tufts University) and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art (now MassArt, the Massachusetts College of Art and Design) in Boston. He also taught at both institutions. Maynard and his wife, Gladys (1927-2004), became year-round residents of Provincetown in the 1960s, his friend Rachel White said.
“Bill continued to paint and sell from his studio in his house at 72A Commercial Street at age 94!” White said. “Some of Bill’s Boston students continued to send photos of current work for critiques and he’d talk to them via phone.”
