Pilots’ huts.
Major J. D. Graham’s 1835 Map of the Extremity of Cape Cod shows two types of dwellings at Race Point: fishermen’s huts and pilots’ huts. I don’t know what kind of pilots Graham referred to, though I suppose it would make sense if large vessels paused here at the point to take on experienced local pilots, either to guide their craft outward past the treacherous Peaked Hill Bars or inward on the tricky course around Long Point and into the harbor.
