Capt. John R. Lavender (1823-1870).
It is a long way from Liverpool, Nova Scotia, to Miragoane, Haiti — nearly 2,000 miles — but that distance describes the arc of Lavender’s life, with many years in between spent in Provincetown. His younger brother, Capt. Joseph A. Lavender, is buried nearby. Their older brother Allen Lavender (1804-1860) is in Gifford Cemetery. John Lavender was naturalized in September 1846. Two months later, he married Sarah Mayo (1826-1915), who is buried under this monument. Her husband is not here. Captain Lavender died in Miragoane, on the Tiburon Peninsula, where he is buried.
