Capt. Joseph A. Lavender (1825-1870).
Like his brother, Capt. John R. Lavender, Joseph was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. He married Clarissa A. Atwood (b 1829) in 1847 and died at sea of “congestive fever” — which is to say, malaria — at the age of 49. As is evident on his gravestone, he was a Mason. John and Joseph’s older brother Allen Lavender (1804-1860) is in Gifford Cemetery.
