Rosilla Bangs (1823-1908).
Only one person was killed during the construction of the Pilgrim Monument. Unhappily, it was 85-year-old Rosilla Bangs, who was crossing the street near the base of High Pole Hill when a lightning bolt struck the tether holding a railcar full of granite blocks at the top of a temporary railway. She didn’t stand a chance. Bangs had created the settlement of Bangsville near the Truro line as an overnight camp, with tents made of the canvas that had been used by her husband, Solomon Bangs (1821-1905). Her marker is found in Lot No. 463, a family plot, as a footstone. But her name is also engraved on the principal monument, to an earlier Solomon Bangs (±1791-1874).
