George H. Bickers (1858-1944).
Bickers, descended from a Nova Scotia shipbuilder, spent two full decades — 1901 to 1921 — as the keeper of the Wood End Life-Saving Station, both for the Life-Saving Service and for the Coast Guard, its successor. Previously, he had been stationed at the Race Point Life-Saving Station for 11 years. He was technically a veteran of the Spanish-American War, since the Navy had charged the life savers with keeping the coastal watch. Before that, Bickers had been a fisherman.
