Cemetery 24 Tworkov Jack PHC&M 70

(2017)

Jack Tworkov (1900-1982) and Rachel Tworkov (1916-1991).

An artist of national consequence, Jack Tworkov was an Abstract Expressionist who was strongly identified with the New York School and had deep roots in Provincetown, where he arrived in his mid-20s to study with Ross Moffett and Heinrich Pfeiffer, and where he came to know Karl Knaths. He also worked with John Dos Passos. Like a number of his contemporaries in this cemetery, he was born in Europe — Biala, Poland, to be exact. Like many, he also studied at the Art Students League. But among his distinctions was the chairmanship of Yale’s art department in the 1960s. He and his wife, Rachel, lived at 30 Commercial Street. His studio, in the rear, is still easily visible from Point Street. Tworkov’s students included Jennifer Bartlett, Jonathan Borofsky, and Richard Serra.
