Capt. Antone George Valentine (1929-2006).
“Valentine” proclaims the lintel stone over one of the newer vaults in the cemetery, memorializing the family that has tended Valentine’s Guesthouse at 88 Commercial Street since 1910. Antone George Valentine, best known in town as George, graduated from Provincetown High School, worked for Atlantic Coast Fisheries Company and then — like his father and his grandfather — he shipped out. He was the owner and captain of Valente, a lobster boat, and the dragger New England. On 15 October 1949, he married Helen Gertrude Silva (b 1929). Valentine went to work in 1978 for the United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 1998. The Valentines’ daughter Joady is married to Alex Brown, one of the last fishermen who actually lives in Provincetown.
