A fouled anchor marks the grave of Captain Atkins, keeper of the Peaked Hill Bars Life-Saving Station (No. 7), who perished at the age of 46 when he and his mates — Surfmen Stephen F. Mayo (1852-1880) and Elisha N. Taylor (1834-1880) — made a second trip out in a surfboat to rescue two sailors on the wrecked sloop C. E. Trumbull. The sailors had refused to board the surfmen’s vessel on their first run, so the lifesavers tried again, only to lose their own lives. The inscription over the anchor is from Revelation 2:10: “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life.” [Lot No. 127.]
