Capt. Charles A. Foster (1863-1920) and Elizabeth B. “Lizzie” (Williams) Foster (1870-1956) | Gifford.
With neither beginning nor end, the orb seems the perfect embodiment of the hope of resurrection. Captain Foster’s monument is one of several in the Provincetown necropolis — including those of Gwen Bloomingdale (1941-2001) and Francis “Frank” Perry Smith (1835-1918) — that feature a polished stone sphere. The captain’s parents both came from the Azores. He commanded the schooner Frank Foster, which was badly damaged during the 1898 Portland Gale. His wife, Lizzie, was credited by Nancy W. Paine Smith as one of the stalwarts who helped rebuild the Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church at 170 Commercial Street after it burned to the ground in 1908, by raising money for the reconstruction. In her 97th year, she was one of the first two residents of the Cape End Manor at 26 Alden Street. [Lot No. 205.]
