A profusion of ferns (sincerity) surround a single calla lily (holiness, faith, purity) on Dyer’s ornate but crooked headstone, the base of which is inscribed with two lines (italicized here) from the end of “Over the River,” a popular poem published 20 years earlier by Nancy Amelia Woodbury Priest Wakefield: “I shall pass from sight with the boatman pale, / To the better shore of the spirit land. / I shall know the loved who have gone before, / And joyfully sweet will the meeting be, / When over the river, the peaceful river, / The angel of death shall carry me.” [Lot No. 65.]
