Stephen Frank Mayo (1852-1880) | Hamilton.
Surfman Mayo, Surfman Elisha N. Taylor (1834-1880), and Capt. David H. Atkins (1834-1880) of the Peaked Hill Bars Life-Saving Station perished needlessly on 30 November 1880 making their way back out to the stranded sloop C. E. Trumbull of Rockport, whose captain and pilot had refused passage on the life-savers’ first sortie. As the surfboat made its second approach, Trumbull‘s boom swung around and caught the small vessel, capsizing it. Three surfman survived. Three drowned. When the storm cleared the next day, a rising tide floated Trumbull off the bars, with its captain and pilot unharmed. Surfman Mayo, 28, was the sole support for his ailing father, Lysander D. Mayo. Because there were no government benefits then available to the members of the United States Life-Saving Service, predecessor of the Coast Guard, private citizens were enlisted to help the family. They raised $600 for Mayo’s father, equal to about $15,000 today. [Lot No. 81.]
