George Bryant (1937-2015).
Who else but George would have a cast-iron sailboat to mark his grave? This ardently independent and amazingly knowledgeable man was a historian, architect, home inspector, consultant, public servant, and gadfly; by turns sweet, funny, impatient, and irascible. He never found an object or document from which he could not wring some meaning. Finding places to store all his treasures was another matter, one that landed him in confrontations with neighbors and town officials. It is well said, however, that the only difference between a collector and a hoarder is a display case. Bryant was not everyone’s cup of tea. But his death left an enormous civic void.
