Capt. James Sparks (1771-1849).
James Sparks first shipped out at the age of 11. He married Abigail “Nabby” Cook (1777-1854). The couple’s nine children included Capt. Harvey Sparks (1817-1886), who captained the whaler Mary E. Nason all the way to the Pacific Ocean in 1868, and the four-times-widowed Capt. Thomas Sparks (1804-1895). Their grandsons included Capt. Benjamin F. Sparks (1850-1916) and Charles Addison Sparks (1853-1925), who were cousins. LCDR Frederick Addison Sparks (1879-1919) was among their grandsons. When James Sparks’s sea journeys were behind him, he Sparks processed sea salt for curing.
